Light My Life

Maggie Taylor was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the Crown Bearer for the 1967 May Queen at Hathaway Brown School. Later, she graduated from Yale University with a BA in philosophy. She received an MFA in photography from the University of Florida. For approximately ten years she worked with a camera and film creating still-life images in her studio and garden. In 1996 and 2001 she received State of Florida Individual Artist’s Fellowships. In 1996 Taylor began working digitally, using a scanner in place of a camera. By placing objects directly on the glass top of the scanner she is able to create a unique type of digital image which has some photographic qualities.

In October 2006, FotoFest International, China Hewlett Packard and a team of Chinese photographers and businessmen collaborated to create an international portfolio review program for Chinese photographers. Modeled on FotoFest’s portfolio review program in Houston, TX, the Meeting Place FotoFest Beijing was an unprecedented event in China.

II was born in Moscow on 19th of August 1983.

My mother was a painter, and I was spending a lot of time among the artists, though I was not particulary interested in their activities.

I felt an urge for arts and creation some time ago, when I was working as a designer, which pushed me to study seriously the design. That’s how I "bumped into" photography, and I had an idea to combine it with design.

Creation brings me an enormous pleasure, I became conscious of the fact that photography is something I always wanted to do. I am stubborn, ambitious and optimistic by nature, I like being different, and my work, I hope, reflects these features of my character.

The amorphous entities and reaching tentacles emerge and take form much like the navigation of a surfer within a wave. These drawings are executed purely by hand, using Sharpie pens. I begin with a curve, from which lines and forms begin to emerge, evolve, morph, and grow organically, in an intuitive flow, while maintaining delicate, elegant precision. The methodology is rhythmic, spontaneous, and direct, reducing interference with mark-making. Much like zen calligraphy, they are improvisational, and intuitively composed, where the physicality and the mark making become one. I’m utilizing stark, amorphous lines to trace the movement and human experience of the non-linear and imaginational realms. Through this intuitive visual language, a negotiation of the visceral and everyday human experiences of beauty and pleasure, and feeling are given voice.

Edoardo Belinci is born to Rome in 1974. After to have acquired the traditional techniques of painting and the illustration, from 1994 he begins a constant experimentation in the field of the Digital Art, offering a reflection on the world of today like a metaphor of a possible future, reconstructed through most careful digital elaborations. The Juggler is the first of ‘the rope’ paintings. Although the final surrealistic image apprears to have come into being quite naturally, it changed many times until it arrived at its finished state.

Rosa was a young dancer that used to frequent our home years ago. When she was accepted to a German ballet company in 1984, her physical and emotional maturity were put to the test. She left her home and country and made that first step out into the world of dance alone.

Keith Thompson is a freelance artist specializing in concept art for a myriad of applications including books, movies, video games and pen and paper role-playing games. His work has appeared around the world, and he is the author of several books teaching the ins and outs of creating concept art. His work has been featured in the Spectrum art annuals and was exhibited in their show at the Museum of American Illustration.

Organic, feminine and psychadelic. I look back on old doodles and they’re very similar to the ones I do now. I’ve always been drawn to swirling and organic shapes and have been told that my drawings are kinda psychedelic, which could be a result of the 60’s music my parents have always played. I often use pastel colours but every now and then try to break out and use bright, bold colours. I usually do most of my drawings with a 2B pencil and sketchpad, which I then scan and colour them in photoshop. I love the freedom and flexibility that the computer gives you, but find that I’m most creative when I start with a hand-drawn work.

Seeing with Photography Collective is a group of photographers based in New York City who are visually impaired, sighted and totally blind. Coming from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, we share an awareness of sight loss, along with the determination to dialogue and integrate our images into a more universal context. Sighted assistants focus and compose the view camera’s frame directed by the blind artist. Then, in a darkened room, we leave the camera’s shutter open as we slowly paint our sitter with a small flashlight …human scaled exposures, lasting many minutes, rather than the instant shutter click we typically hear. Luminous distortions, blurred or glowing forms result from the technique, not digital altering. The nature of our visual limitations can provoke any viewer or perceiver of these portraits…Is less, more? What is seeing? What does one choose to see?
